Lesson Plan Theme: Present Simple

Description: Can be used as an ice breaker with a new class or a class that hasn't had the chance to get to know each other very well. Focus on using present simple questions to find out about other students in the class. After a listening, lesson ends with a very active game.

Description: This lesson gives some practice at formation of questions and gives students ample speaking practice and the opportunity to speak about their reading habits. The listening consists of a woman carrying out a survey about reading habits.

Description: The lesson opens by asking students what they know about famous people. The first listening activity is a useful note-completion exercise and the second listening activity is more grammar-focused, on the third person interrogative form of the Present Simple tense. This grammar focus continues in the lesson as students look at the third person interrogative structure, then do a jigsaw speaking activity.

Description: Students work on different vacation vocabulary such as trekking, cruise, city break, etc. Then they read an ad for a cruise and answer comprehension questions with an optional writing assignment to end.

Description: Students talk about sites of interest in their hometown before reading an article about an unusual property development in China. Some focus on there is/there are for describing towns and their amenities.

Description: An article (quite challenging for this level) about Jake, a man who spends 4 months looking after a lighthouse. Using present simple to talk about routines with a particular focus on forming interrogative sentences. Optional writing activity at the end.

Description: After an initial exercise that focuses on the vocabulary used to describe types of TV shows, students read descriptions of different TV programs and the likes and dislikes of four people who live together. The final reading activity consists of a TV listings page in a newspaper that forms the core of a speaking activity.

Description: Some job vocabulary for your students before they read about Derek, who picks up garbage at the sports stadium. There is a reading comprehension exercise and the lesson finishes with a game in which students use the present simple to describe jobs to their partner.

Description: A lesson that practices the use of the infinitive to talk about why someone went somewhere (e.g. to see the pyramids, to eat pizza, to visit a friend, etc) The theme of the lesson is tourism and the reason people travel to certain countries, with a particular focus on the Gold Coast in Australia, which forms the basis of the main reading comprehension exercise. The lesson finishes with a speaking activity to practice the infinitive of purpose.
