Lesson Plan Theme: Vacations

Description: A warmer about small/large objects before a reading that introduces there is/are and some basic adjectives. The lesson finishes with a fun memory game which gives further practice of there is/are.

Description: Hotel reviews are used to practice there is/there are, with some work also on adjectives to describe good and bad hotels. The rules of adjective use are looked at before a final activity sees students re-order words to make correct sentences.

Description: A look at the pronunciation of the past simple regular form and some work also on recognising regular and irregular forms. After reading about somebody's vacation, student's talk about their own in a card-based game.

Description: The Black Swan Hotel in England has a few problems today. Students have to indentify the imperative verb form being used to give instructions to the hotel handyman. The lesson finished with a game in which the imperative is used to give instructions and advice.

Description: The listening here is a conversation between two friends on a flight from New York to Los Angeles. After an initial discussion about the merits of air travel, the listening exercises are an event re-ordering and a true/false exercise. Some work on past simple forms to finish with.

Description: Students work on different vacation vocabulary such as trekking, cruise, city break, etc. Then they read an ad for a cruise and answer comprehension questions with an optional writing assignment to end.

Description: A lesson that practices the use of the infinitive to talk about why someone went somewhere (e.g. to see the pyramids, to eat pizza, to visit a friend, etc) The theme of the lesson is tourism and the reason people travel to certain countries, with a particular focus on the Gold Coast in Australia, which forms the basis of the main reading comprehension exercise. The lesson finishes with a speaking activity to practice the infinitive of purpose.

Description: Some early holiday/vacation vocabulary work is consolidated later in the lesson with a reading and then students are given the chance to use the new language speaking about going to the beach. And, to finish things off, a game!

Description: Looking at finished and unfinished periods of time. And people's life experiences and how to describe them. This is the third in a series of four lessons on the present perfect.

Description: Leroy is on a European vacation and sends his family a "speaking postcard". Some work on word stress and a review of past simple, present continuous, going to future.

Description: Using functional language that your students will often find useful, this lesson looks at the hotel check-in. After the two-part listening comprehension, students will role play a check-in themselves.

Description: Students learn specialist vacation vocabulary and then answer reading comprehension questions based on postcards, before writing their own.

Description: Students read a descriptive description of a vacation trip and then brainstorm other similar vocabulary in preparation for their own short composition.

Description: Students talk about what they like doing while at the beach. A short reading is used as the source for a debate/discussion before a speaking flashcard-based game finishes the lesson.

Description: Students relive a nightmare vacation at a terrible hotel and then work in pairs to plan the perfect letter of complaint to the offending travel company. Focus on relevancy/tone/style in a formal letter.

Description: The lesson focus is a business meeting at the publishers of vacation guides and the discussion that takes place as they plan their next set of city guides. Students learn not only the language of business strategy meetings, but also look at much of the language around the subject of vacations.
