Intermediate

These are materials that will probably be suitable for students who have studied English for approximately two academic years. There will also be revision materials for grammar/vocabulary covered at the Elementary and Pre-Intermediate levels. For more information on the level classification used on esl lounge, go to our level description page.

The lesson materials have been divided into the following categories for Intermediate.

Pairwork Activities, Surveys, etc

There is a good variety of communicative materials for Intermediate. At intermediate level, students should feel pretty comfortable speaking in pairs or moving around the class and this allows the teacher to take a more withdrawn role. Some examples of pairwork and survey activities for Intermediate include, amongst others, work on passive, phrasal verbs, polite requests and an ice-breaker.

Flashcards and Role Cards

At this Intermediate level, the flashcards/prompt cards will be used less in teacher-centred activities but rather to aid students in more open classroom speaking.

Listening

We have Intermediate listening materials on the Premium site. These cover a wide array of interesting topics and the recordings use a variety of accents. These listening lesson plans have comprehensive teacher notes and will help your students to become more proficient and confident in their listening skills.

Worksheets

Remember these worksheets can be done either in the class or be given for homework. For intermediate level there are worksheets here on verb patterns, modal verbs, the passive and conditionals, etc.

Structure

By Intermediate, there is less, if any, need to use materials that focus so closely on individual grammatical parts of the language. There is a useful sheet on first/second conditional differences and others on the passive.

Reading and Writing

For intermediate level, there are some example compositions and some work on the important reading skill of guessing words from context.

Games

Whether it's to fill the final five minutes of a class or just getting students using in a relaxed context the language they have learnt, games are invaluable in the ESL classroom. At this level, there are games practising the language learnt at intermediate level including the passive, adverbs and relative clauses.

Check out the main board games section too.

Error Correction

Use of error correction resources helps students improve their own self-correction techniques and thus increase their independence from the teacher. There are error correction/ grammar auction sheets which cover all the new language learnt at Intermediate.
