These are materials that will probably be suitable for students in their first year of English studies. There will also be revision materials for grammar/vocabulary covered at the Beginners level. For more information on the level classification used on esl lounge, go to our level description page.
The lesson materials have been divided into the following categories for Elementary.
Click any one to go to the resources.
Pairwork Activities, Surveys, etc
At this elementary level, students are exposed to past simple, present continuous and ways of expressing the future too. This enables are far wider range of communicative activities than are possible at the previous beginners level. As well as these three language areas, there are also resources to get students practising 'can' and some functional activities too such as 'in a hotel' or 'at a restaurant'.
Flashcards and Role Cards
These flashcards or prompt cards again practice heavily the past, the present continuous and the future at this level. They can be used in the smaller sizes for small classes or student to student group work or they can be blown up to be used in larger classes for teacher-centred activities.
Most students would get through the equivalent of the esl-lounge Level 1A and 1B classifications in a standard academic year. For this reason, there are quite a few review/revision sheets among the usual gap-fill, etc resources in the 'Worksheets' section at this level.
Reading and Writing
There are resources at this elementary level that give students practice in reading and writing. The reading materials may be straight reading comprehensions but can be easily adapted for other reading practice. At this low level, the writing materials are generally guided writings.
Vocabulary work is something that should always be revisited. Repetition and revision is so important for vocabulary learning. At this elementary level, there are materials concerned with the body, animals and computers as well as a series of vocabuluary sheets based around holidays throughout the year.
These are materials specifically concerned with a particular grammar structure at this elementary level of English. The main structures at this level are the Past Simple, Present Continuous and structures for future.
Games can be successfully used to get students to consolidate what they have learnt in the rest of the lesson. For elementary level, there are games to practice, amongst other things, past simple, present continuous, vocabulary and quantifiers.
The subject of error in the ESL classroom is of crucial importance and there are more materials to deal with this at Elementary level. Some serve as useful revision activities for the whole of level 1
As the name suggests, here you will find things that couldn't easily be put into any of the other categories. Examples for this level include a fascinating list of the most commonly used irregular verbs in English and a logic puzzle that could even be used at level 1a.
