C1 Advanced Exam (CAE): Writing Test 1

Part One
You must answer this question. Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style on the separate answer sheet.
1. You attended a local council meeting where proposals to reduce town centre traffic were discussed. You have made the notes below:
What policies can we follow to reduce traffic in the town centre?
- cycle paths
- fines
- public transport
Some opinions expressed during the meeting:
"Cycling everywhere isn't realistic - what about large families?"
"Fines mean the rich will continue driving."
"Nobody uses the existing buses and trams!"
Write an essay, discussing two of the policies in your notes. You should explain which policy would help reduce congestion most, giving reasons in support of your answer.
You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the meeting, but you should use your own words as far as possible.

Write an answer to one of the questions 2-4 in this part. Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style on the separate answer sheet.
2. You and a friend recently spent time in a resort in an expensive hotel. On returning home, you have decided to post a review of the hotel on a travel website.
You enjoyed much of your stay at the hotel, but found significant problems with cleanliness and the quality of the food on offer. Mention these in your review while also praising the aspects of the visit that you enjoyed.

3. You have just read an article in a newspaper urging the government to raise taxes and spend money on making the country more attractive as a possible host for the next World Cup. You are against this idea and decide to write a letter to the newspaper setting out your point of view.
You argue that the inhabitants are already paying too much tax and the economy isn't doing very well. The World Cup is a one-off event that will then leave the country with bills to pay. The World Cup being hosted will bring a whole range of its own problems, from traffic to new construction projects.

4. Having now completed your first year in a new job, the manager has asked you to write a report on how the year went.
You should mention something about the initial training, your colleagues, whether you feel you've done well and achieved your goals and also some problems you encountered.
