A small school in the Yukon has become the first in the territory to adopt a four-day school week, in a trial program that is being closely watched by educators across northern Canada.

Pinewood Elementary School in the community of Haines Junction began the new schedule at the start of this term, with classes running from Monday to Thursday and Fridays reserved for teacher planning and optional student activities.

School principal Margaret Caron said the decision was made after extensive consultation with parents, teachers, and community members.

Caron explained that the longer weekend allows families more time for cultural activities, outdoor recreation, and travel to medical or other appointments, which often require lengthy trips from remote communities.

Teachers, she added, have welcomed the additional preparation time, which they previously had to find during evenings and weekends.

The school day has been extended by approximately forty-five minutes to ensure that the total number of instructional hours remains within territorial guidelines.

Education officials have been monitoring the program closely.

Yukon Education Director James Sinclair said that early indicators are positive, with attendance rates having improved slightly compared to the same period last year.

However, Sinclair cautioned that it is too soon to draw firm conclusions about the impact on academic performance, which will be assessed through standardised tests in the spring.

Not all parents are supportive of the change.

Some have raised concerns about finding childcare on Fridays, particularly working families without flexible schedules.

The school is working with community partners to offer optional Friday programs at low cost.

If the trial is judged successful, other schools in the territory may consider similar arrangements.

A final decision on whether to continue the program is expected by next summer.
