A long-serving Alberta politician announced his resignation yesterday, citing personal reasons and a desire to return to private life.

Thomas Reinhart, who has represented the riding of Red Deer South in the provincial legislature for fourteen years, made the announcement during a brief press conference at his constituency office.

Reinhart, sixty-two, served as Minister of Transportation from twenty-twenty to twenty-twenty-three and previously held positions on the provincial finance and education committees.

He said the decision had been difficult but that he wished to spend more time with his family, particularly his three grandchildren, who live in British Columbia.

Political analysts have noted that the timing of the resignation is unusual.

Reinhart's announcement comes just eight months before the next provincial election, leaving his party with limited time to find a replacement candidate.

Some commentators have suggested that internal party tensions may have contributed to the decision, although Reinhart himself denied this when asked directly by reporters.

During his time in office, Reinhart was best known for championing rural infrastructure projects and securing federal funding for highway upgrades in central Alberta.

Critics, however, pointed to his opposition to several environmental initiatives and his handling of the twenty-twenty-two transit funding dispute.

A by-election is expected to be called within ninety days.

Several names have already been mentioned as possible replacements, including former town councillor Patricia Singh and local business owner James MacLeod.

Reinhart said he would continue to serve his constituents until a successor is elected and indicated that he would not be seeking any role in federal politics.

He thanked his supporters and acknowledged that the decision marked the end of a significant chapter in his life.
