CELPIP - Speaking Practice
On this page, you will find practice speaking tests to help you prepare for the Speaking component of the CELPIP General exam. Each practice test includes all eight tasks with on-screen timers for preparation and recording time, just as you would experience on test day.
The CELPIP Speaking Test has eight tasks and takes approximately 15-20 minutes. It is taken on a computer with no examiner present. The tasks test a range of speaking skills: giving advice, describing personal experiences, describing scenes and making predictions from images, comparing options and persuading, handling difficult situations, expressing opinions, and describing unusual objects. Each task has its own preparation time (30 or 60 seconds) and recording time (60 or 90 seconds).

- Speak directly to the person as though they are in front of you, not about them.
- Give at least three clear suggestions, each supported by a practical reason or example.
- Use transition phrases to signal each new idea: "If I were you...", "Another thing you could do...", "One final idea is..."
- Keep a warm, helpful tone throughout.

- For Task 3, start with a general overview, then describe specific details. End with a comment about mood or atmosphere.
- For Task 4, use the same image. Predict what will happen next, thinking about both actions and feelings.
- Use the present continuous for actions happening now ("The man is handing...") and future forms for predictions ("She will probably...", "They might...").
- Do not waste time trying to describe everything. Focus on what you can describe well.

- Part 1 gives you 60 seconds to read two options and choose one. You do not speak during Part 1.
- In Part 2, a third option is introduced. You must persuade the listener that your original choice is better than this new option.
- Compare directly: explain what your choice offers that the other does not.
- Use specific language rather than vague phrases like "it's just better" or "I prefer it".
- Task 6 (Difficult Situation): Choose one of two people to address, then speak to them directly. Be firm but respectful, clearly explain the problem, and make a specific request.
- Task 7 (Expressing an Opinion): Take a clear position, give 2-3 supported reasons, and use transitions between them. Do not sit on the fence.
- Task 8 (Unusual Situation): You are describing an unusual object to someone who cannot see it. Start by setting up the phone call, describe the key features, and close the conversation naturally.
