Part One
You must answer this question. Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style on the separate answer sheet.
1. You attended a meeting at a local college about who to invite to come and speak to the students. You have made the notes below:
Who should we invite to come and give the annual Spring Term Talk?
- aspiring actor
- celebrity pop star
- influential scientist
Some opinions expressed during the meeting:
"We need someone that the students will recognise!"
"The celebrity culture is already bad enough without us adding to it!"
"We need someone who can talk to students on the same level."
Write an essay, discussing two of the people suggested in your notes. You should explain which person would be of most interest to the students. giving reasons in support of your answer.
You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the meeting, but you should use your own words as far as possible.

2. A motoring website has asked its users to submit reviews of cars they either drive currently or have driven in the past.
Mention in your review the main features of the car model and its main plus and minus points, including such aspects as safety and running costs.

3. You have been working in a local insurance company for about six months. A friend of yours is about to start work in the same office and wants to know what it's like.
You write an email to your friend, saying what you have enjoyed about working for the company, but also mentioning some of the things you and others are not happy with. You should also give advice about how your friend can adapt quickly to working in the office and give some tips to make your friend's initial days less stressful.

4. A college where you work recently had a talk given by a Careers Guidance expert, who spoke about what students could do to help themselves get the best possible job after they left college.
The college has asked you to write a report outlining the main points of the talk, including tips on research, interview advice, work experience and job applications.
