Pairwork Activities, Surveys, etc

Getting students of this advanced level speaking together in pairs or groups shouldn't be very difficult. These resources should make for the most communicative activities.

Vocabulary

Page One       Page Two       Page Three

English vocabulary gets more and more complicated as learners progress in their English studies. Fine differences between words can confuse students. Here you will find high level vocabulary worksheets and exercises.

There is a separate section for the formation of words based on word roots, something that is increasingly tested in examinations and is also a vital skill for students to learn as part of increasing their own learner independence.

Reading and Writing

There are some general reading comprehensions in this section for more advanced level students. There are three main types of reading comprehensions:

  • Open comprehension questions
  • True or False questions
  • Multiple Choice questions

Conversation and Discussion Prompts

Activities with high teacher control will probably be minimal at this level of students' English learning. Here are some resources to encourage freer group or class discussion.

Cloze

Or, as many teachers call these exercises, "gap fill". The open cloze exercises here focus student attention on more grammatical items such as prepositions, articles, pronouns and the like. Above, in the vocabulary section, you can find multiple choice cloze exercises which test students' vocabulary abilities more - verbs, nouns, adjectives and so on.

Editing

Page One       Page Two

The examinations that students take at this level (such as FCE, TOEFL) require more and more that students are able to efficiently edit written work. Alongside the error correction worksheets that are found at lower levels, the main focus at this advanced level is on editing of larger bodies of texts. There are four main types of editing required:

  • Spelling
  • Missing word
  • Extra word
  • Punctuation

Phrasal Verbs

Page One       Page Two

Phrasal Verbs always cause problems for students at this level so we have a section devoted solely to this tricky area of English vocabulary.

Worksheets

High level grammar worksheets. At this advanced level, we can find grammar such as complex modal usage and the causative covered.

Sentence Transformations

Page One       Page Two

This is something which is included in many international examinations such as Cambridge First Certificate. Students need to take the information in one sentence and re-write it, using a given word so that the second sentence has exactly the same meaning.

Games

Why shouldn't advanced level students play games too? If they are used in the same way as at lower level, why not? To make lessons more enjoyable, to give both students and teachers a 'breather', to help foster in students a positive feeling about their learning experience...and twenty other reasons.

Check out the main board games section too.

Miscellaneous

Resources which don't fit well elsewhere. For this level, for example, there is something which can be used at slightly lower levels too and gets students to think about their expectations of the course, their teacher, their school and of themselves. ESL teachers have long considered student autonomy important and this helps to get students thinking about the same issue. Also on the same subject as student autonomy, there is a questionnaire aimed at increasing student efficiency when using a dictionary.
