Level 2: Pre-Intermediate >> Grammar Structure >> Overview of first conditional formation and following exercise. First ConditionalIf + present simple, will + infinitive e.g.: If John goes to London in the summer, he will see his friends and family. 'If' doesn't have to go first, of course! e.g.: John will see his friends and family if he goes to London in the summer. We use the first conditional to talk about a fairly possible or probable situation (If John goes to London in the summer) and the consequent future result (he will see his friends and family). Remember the negative: e.g.: If John doesn't go to London, he won't see his family. Complete these first conditional sentences: 1. If you.............................(not \ hurry), we will be late! 2. If Enrico.......................(pass) his exam, he will be very happy. 3. If Enrico........................ (fail) his exam, he...................... (not be ) very happy. 4. If you stay awake all night, you.........................(be) very tired tomorrow. 5. Alan .......................( not \ win ) the lottery if he........................ (not \ buy) a ticket. 6. If you eat too much chocolate you ............................ ( become ) fat. 7. We ......................... (not \ go ) to the restaurant if you're not hungry. 8. If Rick.................... (drive) too fast he..................... (have) an accident. To form first conditional questions: If you go to America, will you buy me a baseball cap? If you see John will you ask him to call me? If Sue learns English will she work in London? Will we buy a bigger house if you find a job? |
