In our continuing quest to make this site as useful as it possibly can be for our thousands of users, we have started this section where we bring you some guest writers. With writing on a variety of topics relevant to ESL teachers, the articles you may find here range from the deadly serious to the dead pan.

The Authors

Dr. Niu Qiang and Dr. Martin Wolff

Niu Qiang, PhD was born and raised in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, PRC. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree (1991) in English from Jilin University; her Master of Arts degree (1996) in English Linguistics from Jilin University; and her PhD (1999) in English Linguistics from Shanghai International Studies University. She is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Foreign Languages, Tong ji University, Shanghai, China, where she teaches Psycholinguistics, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), and Testing of English as a Second Language.

Martin Wolff, J.D. was born in Rochester, New York, USA. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree (1976) from Loyola University, Los Angeles, Ca. He has taught Legal English, Business English, Business Management, Marketing, Human Relations and English Conversation. He is currently a Foreign Expert at the School of Foreign Languages, the Shanghai Institute of International Exchange, as part of the Sino-Canadian Joint Program.

Adam Simpson

Adam has been living and working in Istanbul for the past five years. All of this time has been spent in the tertiary education sector. After several enjoyable years working at Bilgi University's English preparatory school, he has now joined the School of languages at Sabanci University. He is currently involved in the development of the School's language syllabus. Outside of the profession, he loves composing music, and is slowly coming to grips with being in his thirties, helped along by his wife Çagla and his son Aslan.

Miriam Lavi (B.A. American Literature/Education, City University of New York, January,'65) is a certified teacher and has been working in the field of ESL - both in NYC and abroad - for 40 years. She is LLICEB certified to teach ESL to professionals (1995), owns and operates an English language institute and is author of the e-guide: How to Become a Personal ESL Trainer

Alex Case

Alex Case has worked as a Teacher, Teacher Trainer, Editor and Director of Studies in Turkey, Thailand, Spain, Greece and Italy. He is presently working as a teacher and freelance EFL writer, and is based in Tokyo. He specialises in not specialising, and teaches everything from kindergarten kids to chairmen of the board. He is also Reviews Editor of TEFL.net. He has written articles here concerning teachers' interaction with inanimate objects and time management.

Monica Wiesmann-Hirchert

Monica has been teaching ESOL/EFL for 16 years - both in Brazil and in the United States. She taught EFL to adults and business executives in Brazil as well as trained other EFL professionals. Monica has been working with international students in the United States for 8 years; she prepares this student population to enol in academic programs at English speaking colleges and universities.

While in Brazil, Monica was the pedagogical coordinator of a large language institute and responsible for selecting and training new EFL instructors, designing business English courses, & administering the University of London proficiency exams. Currently, Monica is coordinating an IEP (Intensive English Program) at a 2-year college in Florida. She is responsible for designing and implementing curriculum, selecting and training ESOL faculty, administering the Institutional TOEFL test, and student counseling and advising.

Thomas Woodgate

After an unlikely career as a stuntman (look carefully in the background of three James Bond films from the 80's), Thomas took up teaching and now teaches at an ESL school in the UK. His interests are paragliding with his dog Nuragi and tinkling with the idea of starting his own ESL site.

Here, he writes on a variety of topics concerning ESL.

Scott Taylor

After an international win in Martial Arts Scott headed to Asia to pursue his dream of training in Asia. South Korea is where he landed and has yet to leave. An avid computer programmer Scott finds Korea to be blessing as a hub of the internet gaming industry as well as the skilled martial artists found here.

Now married with one child Scott continues to train, write, and work in the ESL industry as a consultant, job recruiter. Scott was born and raised in Nova Scotia Canada.
