Scott,

Great post. Which recruiting agency do you work for?

There are definitely some great recruiters out there who genuinely want to make sure the teachers they place are happy with their positions. There are also some shady recruiters out there who are just looking to make a buck at the expense of others. "Maybe recruiters should form an association to regulate themselves?" That's not a bad idea -- maybe some sort of review or rating system for recruiting agencies. Maybe I'll implement something like that on my website.

I would think that the modern age of social media will hopefully help in this regard. If recruiting agencies have a public presence on an open platform like Facebook, it makes them seem a lot more transparent and trustworthy. As time goes on, the shadier recruiters will be exposed by their inability to maintain a genuine social media presence, since to do so would mean being exposed by the teachers they've burned in the past.

Comment on So How Do I Get The Perfect Job? by KoreaJobFinder

Good tips. I would add, it helps to be patient, and to be persistent. Patience means you shouldn't feel like you have to take a job if it doesn't meet your expectations. It pays to start browsing a lot of jobs early, so you get a good idea of what's typical and what's a step above the rest. Likewise, if you're using a recruiter, don't feel pressured into taking the first job you're offered if you don't like the specifics. There are plenty of job openings out there, so if you don't like what you see, you can always wait a bit and see if something better turns up.

Second, the ESL market has become more competitive in recent years. When a dream job turns up, there are going to be a lot of applicants. Don't be discouraged if you don't get the first job you apply to. It pays to be persistent, to follow up and show a genuine interest in the position, and to keep applying for jobs even if your emails go unanswered a lot of the time.

It can be tough, but there are some great jobs out there for those who are willing to take the time to look for them, and the initiative to show a real interest in acquiring the position. Good luck!

There are some great computer programs out there for ESOL students. I am an ESOL teacher in Florida and the ESOL team at our school used grant money to pilot a program called Imagine Learning. This is specifically geared toward ESOL students. It is the best program I have seen. Also, BrainPoP is a great resource. They have a new program called BrainPop ESL

I think this is why ESL classes should be as relaxing as possible, to keep this affective filter as low as you can get it. Stressed students worrying about every word they say is not the best way to effective language learning.
